Sorry, this item has sold.

This is the highly collectible Copeland Spode Rhine river pattern salad or dessert plate. These plates were made in England. It shows the "Rhine" river with boats and houses. They are in very good condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. They are 7 1/2 inches across.

W.T. Copeland & Sons Ltd. Company of Staffordshire England (which purchased the Spode factory in 1833.) The outer edge of the platter is godrooned or roped. The platter is decorated with a red transfer ware pattern, which is called Spode's Tower. This pattern was derived from the printed illustration in Merigot's "View of Rome and it's Vicinity," which was published circa 1796. The pattern shows the Bridge of Salaro near Porta Salara, Rome. The beautiful scene is surrounded with a border of stylized flowers. The pattern completely covers the interior of the platter.
The platter is marked on the bottom "Copeland Spode's Tower England c 1874" in blue. It is also impressed with what looks like "G7".
